Welcome to Hedgehog Class!

Welcome to Hedgehog Class!

We are a Year 1 Class who are always busy with our hands-on learning following the Early Years principles; with learning through play, sensory diets and communication skills at the heart of our learning. We pride ourselves on always using ‘Total Communication’ within our classroom. This includes Makaton, symbols and specialist resources. Mrs Harper is our class teacher, and we have 3 teaching assistants and a care assistant to help support our learning and intimate care.

On Monday Afternoons, we have our Physical Development sessions in the hall working on our gross motor skills using the P.E equipment. We politely request children to be sent into school with shorts, T-shirt and suitable shoes for these sessions in a named bag. These will be kept in school and returned at the end of a half term.

On Wednesday Mornings we work on our independence during Out and About sessions. During these sessions we practise our communication skills and follow simple instructions to walk around the local area or visit Long Lane library. We also use our school minibus to drive further afield to visit places such as Haden Hill Park and the local pet shop.

On Wednesday Afternoons we have our cooking sessions where we work on basic skills using the cooking equipment and explore food school activities to support with selective eating. We kindly request £1 weekly donations to support our cooking and snack sessions in class.

On Thursday Mornings we have our Expressive Arts and Design Music session with Rhythm Time. These involved lots of songs, instruments and sensory elements to help bring music to life.

Throughout the year we will also have Forest School sessions and Swimming Sessions at Swim! Oldbury. You will be contacted on Class Dojo to let you know when these will be taking place.

Every day you will receive a daily Class Dojo to tell you what the children have been doing each day. Your child’s key worker will then send an individualised message about how their day has been.
