Squirrel Class

Welcome to Squirrel Class!

In squirrel class, we have 11 pupils. We are a mixed cohort of children aged from year 3 up to year 6. Each child is supported by Mrs Round (class teacher) and four teaching assistants. We also have a lunchtime supervisor and care assistant.

As a team, we are passionate about striving to achieve learning through celebrating each child’s individual achievement, no matter how big or small. Each child’s journey is unique, and we recognise the importance of teaching to their individual way of learning.

A week in squirrel class is very busy. Let us explore a day in the life of a squirrel…

Our morning starts with sensory circuits, children enter the classroom to movement and regulation following their journey to school.

Next, is morning circle time where children learn the day of the week and explore what the weather is, as well as how many children are in class.

Afterwards, we start phonics with a whole group session before splitting into small groups to complete focus sound work activities.

A quick movement break and then onto maths.

Each day, children will complete an activity that focuses on shape, position and direction, number, measure, time and money, addition and subtraction, or multiplication, division, and fractions. This could include a game, song, or video as a whole class. Children then choose their own learning from a range of resources, whilst staff work individually to complete target work.

Next is snack and play time followed by English. Each day we alternate between the text of the week or a listening activity such as attention bucket or weekend news. Again, children then choose their own learning from a range of resources, whilst staff work individually to complete target work on reading, speaking, writing, or listening. Children read in class twice a week and books are set online to read at home.

Lunchtime and playtime!

Our afternoon starts with calm time and sensory massage.

Followed by a subject of either: Science, PSHE, PE or swimming, Geography or history, art, computing, forest school, music, and my independence; where one group stay and cook, and another group goes for a walk off site to develop important life skills.

Our activity days are:

Forest School  - Monday afternoon

Swimming  - Friday afternoon

Dance - Wednesday morning
