Willow class currently consists of 14 pupils who are taught predominately by Mr Wood. Their PSHE, Creative Arts and English are taught by different teachers throughout the week. The class are also supported by 2 teaching assistants.
The pupils in Willow Class are working to achieve qualifications ranging from Entry Level to GCSE. Some will look to progress to a mainstream college when they leave at the end of Year 11. Our curriculum has an academic focus, but we also work with our pupils to develop their resilience and interpersonal skills. This is done to promote independence and empower our pupils to make a positive contribution to society. As such, lessons such as Food Technology, Creativity, PE, and Independence are very important to us. We also have an option afternoon on a Friday, where they can select a subject or activity that appeals to them and mix with other pupils from outside their class to complete tasks.
Our Preparing for Adulthood day drives this sense empowerment. Our pupils take part in a range of career and independence-focused activities such as working on a farm, completing projects on public transport and fulfilling enterprise projects to raise money that can be spent in the community.
Our pupils work in small groups and staff can support them with their individual needs. They all have individual Social Communication and Emotional Resilience Targets and are encouraged to use Zones of Regulation techniques, access communication technology and access academic and emotional support depending on their needs at a given time.
