  • Amethyst Class

Amethyst class is a specialist learning environment for children in Key stage 3 and 4, a mixed age group of Years 8-11. We are made up of eight children who are supported by Miss Ali (Class Teacher) and three teaching assistants.

We strive to deliver a structured approach to learning. Each term, the children will encounter a different topic, which allows for exciting and engaging learning experiences for all children. The children’s learning is personalised, built around their needs and their individual, SCERTS and EHCP targets. This works alongside the National Curriculum.

We strive to support children to overcome their barriers to learning. We pride ourselves on always using a ‘Total Communication’ within our classroom, to promote an inclusive classroom. This includes:

    • Makaton signing,
    • Personalised ALD Boards,
    • Communication Books,
    • A range of visual aids, including a visual timetable.

We ensure that our curriculum meets the children’s needs in order for them to progress and achieve. Our mornings always start with a relaxing atmosphere where children take part In our Good Morning song using Makaton signing, followed by using our Zones of Regulation board, where children can express how they are feeling throughout the day.

Lessons are delivered as a whole class and then children have the opportunity to work in both small groups or on a 1:1 basis to further develop their learning. We want our children to be consistently encouraged, to be more independent in their learning, social and personal skills.

Children take part in ‘My independence’ and ‘Preparing for Adulthood’ lessons on a weekly basis, where they have the opportunity to develop fundamental life skills by participating in off-site activities and activities within the classroom. We want the children to experience the world beyond the classroom and this is enabled by children being able to go to the farm, take part in local enterprise projects and visiting a local college. Activities are rotated on a termly basis. Also, some of our off-site PE activities include boxing and going to the gym.

In Amethyst class, every achievement no matter how big or small, is always celebrated. Our learners know they are valued and all staff members aim to support the children so that they can achieve their full potential.

    Reminders:

Our PE days are on a Tuesday. Please ensure that your child comes into school wearing an appropriate PE kit.
