  • Maple Class

Maple is a secondary class that consists of 13 pupils and Mr Smart is the class teacher. He is supported by 3 other teaching assistants.  Our focus is to build upon and extend the children’s previous learning experiences in a supportive and interactive way. We work hard to have a classroom environment that supports all communication needs. Our teaching encourages independence, confidence, and active participation in all aspects of school life.

We focus on the individual needs of the learner and their preferred learning style. Learning is fun, engaging, and taught through termly topics that extend children’s understanding and experiences. We love to take learning beyond the classroom, and visit our local community regularly to give our pupils ’real life experience’.

Our classroom is a happy and safe environment that promotes good behaviour and positive thought for our pupils.

Physical Education takes place on Wednesday afternoons. We use a variety of experiences that encourage good physical health and visit places such as Lions Boxing Club and Portway Leisure Centre. Pupils should come to school dressed in their PE kit on Wednesdays and, when it is our classes turn to go swimming, pupils should come to school with their swimming kit. Parents will be informed in plenty of time when this will be necessary.

Children have opportunity to read every day and we further support this with the use of phonics sessions and online Lexia sessions to help improve reading. Pupils also have access to online books in order to read for pleasure.

We keep in regular contact with parents using Class Dojo and welcome any comments or questions that you may have.
